I am putting together a project.

If I want to use m10 bolts to bolt a piece of 25mm thick steel plate that about 150x150mm on each corner whats a sensible distance the hole should be from the edges?

Probably need more information on exactly what you wish to achieve.

Is it important how near to the edge the bolts are? How permanent is this? Hex bolts or cap screws?

Personally I would likely screw them together and then weld them, if I wanted a permanent 50mm thick lump.

            So more info?

Edit: ask the mods to change it – but I expect they would need more info, as well.smiley

A good starting point is 1 diameter in from the edge, so for M10 bolts scribe lines 10 mm from the edges and there you are. A bit more say 1.1 D looks better if washers are used. Basically don't let the corner of a hexagon head be hanging over the edge.

              Martin

Ps And how many model designs do you see where the above rule is ignored?

I've changed your title to 'M10 Bolt hole in 25m thick steel'. Let me know if that's wrong.

So 15mm to the ctr of the bolt would be ok.

I am going to make a solid tool post and starting with a plate to bolt to the X slide however its my intension of starting a proper thread so i I dont want to get too embroild here

In which case I would (in fact did on mine) use countersunk allen bolts, hex heads will get in the way.

See what Dave wrote and what you said was spot on, I've changed it to 25mm, can't get the staff these days.

As for your project I would make it as wide as the cross slide and set the bolts to suit the Tee slot spacing, whatever that is use as the distances front to back as well.
