I am building the 11/2″ scale Allchin and am trying to fabricate the valve handwheels in steel. They are a very unusual design, but I am sure many model engineers have succeeded, even though the construction manual is lacking any detail of this task. I wonder if any member who has managed what to me is an impossible task. I wanted to include a photo of the prototype and a photo copy of the drawing, but I can’t work out out to do this. Any information would be much appreciated. Bernard

I think I would turn the handwheel including a flat disc all the way around the outside and then file that disc away to leave the four protruding grips.

Other option would be again to turn the wheel and solder four lengths of flat strip to the rim which could then be cut back to length and filed to profile.

Any chance of a pic of what shape you’re trying to make Bernard? I may have some ideas on how-to (or know where to get some similar commercial ones)

            Thanks JD

I could post a photo and a drawing, but I can’t figure out how to insert these into my post.

Bernard, the easiest way is to go to the headings along the top of the homepage and click on Albums. This will then give you the option of creating an album where you can upload photos and scans from your computer.

When posting click on the “insert image” icon along the top of the reply window and select the photo from your album. Something like this should then appear.

As I said its all turning then either solder the 4 tabs on as overlength strips or leave a disc all round the outside to be cut away in much the same way you would with a spoked handwheel except the “spokes” are outside the rim.

                    Hi Bernard
Although in 3″ scale, I made the valve handles as Jason’s first description, that is, turning to shape and including a flat ring on the outside, then filing away the flat ring to leave the 4 tabs.

                      Hi Stew

I’m sorry to say that I missed your post of 04/02/2011 about the making of the Allchin valve handle and I find they have now been deleted. Is there any chance you could repeat them for me? I would be grateful.
