      Hi Engineers,

Can anyone tell me if there are any commercial castings available these days for the 2″ Aveling & Porter roller described by John Haining in ME during 1974/5

      Regards to all,

          Hi Donald,
As far as I remember, the design was such that it could be made from solid cast iron bar.  I am sure the cylinder block was designed in “layers” for that reason.  Suitable blocks would be available from College Engineering Supply.  I do have the relevant ME’s in the loft if you need the series.
I am also in Scotland, but up on Spey side, so I guess about 250 miles away.
          Best wishes,

          Martin

The block is not suitable for machining from solid CI but as it is very box like and could easily be done as a steel or brass fabrication mostly from 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4″ plate. The same with most of the other parts that were originally available as castings. The rolls would have to come out of CI bar or thick wall steel tube with the ctrs welded in.

If you don’t have the articles let me know as all but the last page is available on the net, I have it downloaded and stored away.

The sections through the block can be seen here

EDIT forget all that I was thinking of the DX Roller

Right now I’ve got the right engine I don’t know of any suppliers of castings.

There is a guy who posts on Tractiontalk Forum and Model Engineering Clearing House by the name of Kaycee who is building one, you should be able to contact him via those sites.

Thank you to Martin Johnson and JasonB both for your helpful comments.

I have the relevant ME issues and was indeed aware that most of the bits were intended to be fabricated. In one of the issues J. Haining mentions that he hoped some castings were “soon to be available” and he goes on to mention a supplier, the name of whom I can’t remember right now. I just wondered if by any chance someone knew if any of these castings might still be available anywhere.

                  Hi all,

I wonder if it  would it be possible for our esteemed editor to make available on line, the relevant M.E’s containing the build series for the 2″ Aveling & Porter Road Roller described by John Haining during 1974 /75 – in a similar manner to what has been done with the Minnie T.E.

It’s a long time since a roller was featured in M.E. and maybe that one would find a whole new audience amongst younger modellers.

I see the drawings for it are still available from My Hobby Store.

                  Regards to all.

                    Hi

Having actually built the thing, I would strongly suggest that anyone – but especially a beginner – look long and hard at the design before starting to cut metal.

There are so many errors on the drawings that I don’t know where to start.  I don’t think Haining can ever have built it, because the components if made as drawn somply won’t assemble.  I made my own patterns and had them cast when I lived where there was a local foundry

IIRC EIM carried a series on the Burrell Gold Medal tractor in 2″ scale which would adapt to a roller – instructions were given – and IMHO that might be a better bet.

                    Regards, Jim

                      Hi All

I may have some of the patterns you are looking for. My father used to list this engine in his range of 2″ scale model castings, which was as follows:

                      Fowler BB1
                      6 Furrow anti balance plough
Kitson & Hewitson twin cyl/Slanting shaft with clip drum
                      Aveling & Porter Road Roller
                      Darby-Savage Broadside Steam Digger.

I have just moved house and now I have some space to sort these patterns out and do some work on them. I am setting up a website soon to offer the castings and drawings for sale.
I really need to check though if I have the Road roller patterns, so if you could bear with me a week or so I will check, we have literally just moved and are still un-packing.

                      Best regards Neil
