Having the need to remove and remount both grinding wheels on my Tool and Cutter Grinder I find that the manufacturer fitted paper blotter on each wheel has become, shall we say unusable again (knackered otherwise). As it is impossible to buy new paper pads what other materials have our brethren used to soften the compressing forces of the spindle clamping devices on the grinding wheel.

Have thought about actual blotting paper from the likes of Ryman or Smiths but apparently wet ink as was known is not used nowadays.

I was actually advised to try some very fine sand to dry the ink as in Dickens time.

          Hi Terry

I have used cereal box card as any soft thick card is enough to take up the irregularities and give grip to the driving washers safely.

Terry I think you would have a difficult time getting sand to stay in place whilst fitting the grinding wheel!

I don think you need actual blotting paper, any thin cardboard of thick paper would be fine.

I've found pub beer mats ideal. And I enjoy collecting them!

Cereal boxes are what I was going to suggest, more like the actual thing than real blotting paper.

Any soft single layer (not corrugated) cardboard will do.

A model engineer has been found face-down in a bowl of cornflakes.

                        Police suspect a cereal killer.

LHS opined that a wheel assembled without blotters would inevitable burst in time.

It's always called blotting paper but I suspect that in times past that was something that MEs had which seemed similar to what the makers fitted. But when I've bought new wheels what is actually fitted seems more like cereal box cardboard to me!

The blotter also provides a space for the wheel designation and MOS – often covered by the flange, however.

I find that the porous cardboard promotes rusting of the flange and have lately made these of stainless material.

Hi, I agree that cardboard is a suitable blotter, but there are regulations that cover these, especially in a work environment. A free copy of all the regulations is available **LINK** it is worth reading, although most of it is probably not needed for the majority of home users, but there is a paragraph about blotters.

                                Regards Nick.

Hi, while the regulations as such to home use doesn't apply, manufacturers have to supply the machines increasingly to comply with them. I have had the training for them three times now for my work, as the 1970 regs have been superseded by PUWER98 **LINK**

Safety matters with abrasive wheels at home also, because the same injuries can occur by misjudgement of the issues.

I've no intention of belittling anyone, but injuries from these can be quite horrific even in home use.

                                        Regards Nick.

I used to be the Quality Manager at a small (non engineering company) and it was decided (by the government, I believe) to insist that all portable equipment should be PAT tested and testing was a quality responsibility so guess who ended up doing it?? A kettle was picked for demonstration and it failed because there was no water in it and the water was needed to complete the electrical circuit!

Re PAT testing – the HSE actually put out very sensible guidance on what needs to be done. If more people read the guidance and did basic visual inspection themselves, there'd be a lot less people scuttling round with those fancy yellow testers and putting stickers on things that don't even need to be tested.

Having consulted the said book obtained from HSE I can provide the following data on bloggers.
They should be of a compressible material usually cardboard between 0.2 and 1.0mm thick. They should be an easy fit on the shaft and slightly larger than the mounting flanges.
Before fitting they should be checked for wrinkles. Finally a blotter can serve as a label, but a label cannot act as a blotter.
Basically cereal boxes will do. Mick
