Bit of a long shot, but has anyone got a drawing or photo of a starting dog showing how the engagement is backed off, allowing the staring handle to slip once the engine fires, as I've got a bit of a mental block that even a cup of tea hasn't solved and still can't quite visualise it.

Thanks, I should have thought of images first off, mind you there's an awful lot of dog food and grooming products to wade through till you find a suitable example!!

Hi Mick,

You are not having a mental block because the starter dog track is NOT a simple inclined plane. It is definitely a complex curve. Some years ago a friend asked me to repair the business end of his Lancia crank handle and I thought to myself no problem, shows how easy it is to fool my old brain it is. In the end I set the broken part up in a spin indexer and measured the cam at 5 degree steps with a DTI, then replicated it with stepped end mill cuts. I might still have the list of co-ordinates but by now the workshop mice have probably eaten them but I will look all the same, don't hold your breath though.

It's probably a helix so pity you don't have an universal dividing head. You might be able to rig up something using pullies on the index crank and leadscrew and a bit of wire wrapped round. I figure about a 7:1 ratio.

What's the betting you do it in the wrong direction first time
