Can anyone help me please I want to make a bellmouth reamer with a radius of 110 degrees as I don't have a cutter grinder to grid the correct shape on a piece of tool steel I want to turn down a piece of silver steel and braze it to a mild steel shank. But I don't know the correct clearance or how to shape it after I have turned the silver steel to the right diameter.

Hi Bogstandard I think you missunder stood what I wanted to make. The thing what I want to make is the tool with the correct radius to make a bellmouth reamer.

I don't see why you need to braze the silver steel to a MS shank

Just use a round nosed turning tool, set the topslide to the correct angle and turn the silversteel. then grid to half thickness just like a plain or tapered D bit. that will give you teh trumpet shaped hole you need.

              Hi There

You don't need a cutter grinder, you can do it on a bench grinder..

Turn a bit of round bar to the correct diameter of the radius you require.

Hand grind a tool to the aproximate radius.

Put the round bar in the bench drill.

Put some grinding paste on it, something like they used on car valves in the olden days.

Use this to lap the tool to the correct radius.

This was how we did it in the olden days.

              regards David

Hi David i don't realy know how you mean by your method but I will try to explain what I am trying to do.I am making cones to fit in a steam injector. I have already made the taper reamers to produce the taper holes but at the begining taper it as got to have a curved lead in like the front of a trumpet. The tool required to do this as got to have a radius of .110 inch which will convex in shape to produce a reamer that is concave to cut the curved shape at the entrance to the taper hole.

Ah thats better the radius expressed as a length not an angle I can see what you mean now and your methods.

Easiest way would be to put a bit of 1/4" silver steel in the lathe, face off and then set your topslide to cut an angle of say 10deg. turn say 1/4" length of the bar to this taper until the end is 0.220 and getting smaller as it gets nearer the chuck. Now part off the end 1/8" thick.

This will give you a disc 0.220" dia with clearance all round, solder to your MS shank and you now have a round tipped tool with the correct radius on teh end that looks like a lolly pop.

Now use this tool to turn your taper reamers and it will give the correct flare at the end, trying to make just a straight taper reamer and then another for the bell will not give the smoothest transition.

                  EDIT

turn the silversteel like this and part off the end, click to see it bigger

Imagine my tip is that disc soldered to your shank, turn the taper & belmouth as one then use to make the reamer
