After seeing the ad in Model Engineer iss.4414 for Myford Lathes rebuild & service’s by Darren Boden ( ex Myford fitter, 34 years experience ) and Pete from the spares counter, I contacted Darren to discuss a home visit to service my 1979 ML7RB lathe.Darren informed me the service consisted of ” NEW BELTS, WIPER, WICK, BARREL KEY CHECK CONDITION OF HEADSTOCK SCRAPE IF REQUIRED CHECK ACROSS PLATE,READJUST EVERYTHING TO MYFORD SETTINGS”
After agreeing a date & time they turned up promptly & after a cup of tea ( of course ) & a friendly chat they set about the work required on my lathe. After the service I now have a lathe which is as good as the original Myford settings ( saddle now now travels full length of bed with no tight spots ) at a fraction of what Myfords’s use to charge.
I am just a very satisfied customer of Darren & Pete and wish them well in the future.

Interesting Ian,

I have the same lathe as you, 1984 model.

Would it be rude of me to ask what their charges were and how long it took them.

Hi Len.

It took approx ,4hrs ( and 3 cups of tea as they worked) Darren will give a price via email as it depends on travelling distance from the Nottingham area.

Hi Ian, are you saying that they scrape the bed instead of a regrind to allow the saddle to travel the full length with no tight spots?

Yes Darren scraped the rear shear towards the tail stock end to allow the saddle to be adjusted to give free travel the length of the bed.

After reading this thread I emailed Darren at the above mail address, he and Pete have been to service my ML10 and I must say I’m impressed with them and the results after they spent over 3 hours checking and adjusting to original specs.

Darren and Pete came to service my 40 year old ML7 and replace the headstock spindle and bearings. They did a great job and I would recommend them.

Another satisfied and very happy customer. They travelled “south” to London this morning and were full of encouragement and useful advice. It was really interesting to see the way true professionals work. My lathe now feels like it has a new lease of life. I would also recommend them and I wish them well.

My inherited ML7 was badly in need of an overhaul and service after standing unused for many years. Darren and Pete have done a fantastic job, and were more than happy to explain the process and answer any questions. I would heartily reccomend them.

It is nice to see so many users happy with the service received, but would anyone like to give a rough order of cost, please? Obviously it will depend upon distance travelled, time spent, parts needed, etc., but are we talking £200, £500, or £1000?

Any form of ball-park, budgetary estimate, would be much appreciated.

Having been
put off initially by the travel cost portion for an individual visit to the
Surrey/Hants border, I trawled the local ME clubs for a potential partner
and: result! (thanks, Fred). A couple of weeks ago, in one very long day,
Darren & Pete made the 320-mile round trip to service our respective Super
7s and left us both well satisfied.
Their intimate knowledge of the foibles of these machines is well worth
paying for, as the resulting smooth motion and improved accuracy confirms. Excellent value, particularly if you can find
a way of spreading the “non-productive” element when you’re some way from
Nottingham.

I had my recently acquired S7b serviced by Darron and Pete this week. Worth every penny despite the fact that the cost included a 300 mile round trip.

Firstly they gave me the reassurance that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with my purchase and that it is accurately set up. But in addition, as a result of the service, it is much quieter and smoother to operate.

Two really nice helpful guys with an enormous amount of knowledge about Myford and their machines. Darron could even tell which person had done the original scraping of the crosslide!

I cannot recommend them enough.

This is interesting, but why is everyone so coy about prices? Sure, travel costs are going to vary, but it would be very helpful to have some idea of what the charges would be for typical jobs. None of us want to waste Darren’s time giving quotes if the cost is likely to be way out of budget.

Come on those of you who have had work done, give us some figures.

Let’s say 35 pence per mile, say 300 mile round trip that’s £105 travel costs. Add 2 x 4 man-hours at £15 per hour, that’s £120. Add say £30 for miscellaneous pieces from the list of NEW BELTS, WIPER, WICK, BARREL , and my grand ball park estimate is £255. Of course, in no way would I want to under price these artisan workers and so apologies if I have underpriced!

I suspect you are a bit off the mark there – 35p/mile might cover the fuel & running costs for the vehicle but realistically they will not average more than 50 mph for the journey so that will be another 6 hours each. Such speculation however is pointless.

All those posting here speak favourably of the work done – if you need work on your Myford give them a call and ask for a price. I guess they will be happy to supply an estimate. As Adrian posts finding other jobs for them in the area could share the expence.

Why quible about a few pence when you can get such a service, remember the good/bad old days when even a myford bolt cost an arm and a leg. Just say thank you that these 2 gentlemen have taken this service on. I say all power to there elbow just try and cost this service to old Myford prices a second mortguage comes to mind. So as my youngest grandson (18)says get real granddad this is 2012 not 1960s.
