      Hi comardes

Wanted to make a survey about the rigidity of a small workbench. I often have this common problem that when I hacksaw bars in a vise the small workbench would rock too! I have a long heavy workbench which is ok for most jobs except my small workbench with fitted rollers many year back.

I got catalogues from Sjobergs (Sweden) wood-making workbench supplier and I studied their design. They have this common feature in all their benches a sturdy table top made of Beech wood and both ends are supported by 2 rectangular thick frames. Wonder this design is vibration proofs? Of course, the bench itself must contain certain weight.

A visit to IKEA-S’pore, I noticed that small tables are normally bolted to the wall beside to be stable-proof which I do not favour at all…any suggestions?

The Sjobergs benifit a great deal by having the optional cupboards fitted below. The side and back panels of the cupboards add a great deal to the triangulation of the base, having said that I also have my woodworking Sjoberg fixed to the brick wall behind more for when hand planing than sawing.

I always screw my workbench to the wall. It don’t move much.

Me too – I screwed a 2inch piece of angle to the bench and then to the wall. Like Derry, it don’t move much!

                Hi Steve
Cocerning workbenches, Have you considered old sideboards,They can
useualy be picked up at auction for well under twenty quid, Just make sure
you get one that is worm free,They can be chocked with peices of 2×4 to
the height that you want, And this useualy leaves lots of lovely space
underneath for storage, They come in many diferent shapes and sizes
with many diferent cuboard and drawer arangements, I have four in my
workshop, And i dont know how i would manage without them they are
surprisingly sturdy and even more sturdy if you do like Mr Withnell says
and secure them to the wall,
