      Hi Andy
Are going the shape down that vertival face on the R/H side if so is the claper box set at an angle so on the return stroke the box swing away from the face ?

Hiya Nobby, still learning about it and I honestly can’t tell you a thing because it’s still on manual sweaty bloke power.
I’m looking to power it up over the coming weeks, so I can focus on acquiring the skills of tooling and angles, letting the machine do the work.

Found a fabby resource for shapers, hundreds of pages of info you can print out and read at your pleasure and leisure.
I recommend “The Shaping machine” as your first stop and “shaper work” which is a huge WW2 manual from the USA war production guys.

Shapers seem to be the secret machine tool no-one ever talks about, they make milling a pleasure and an art, just as lathes make turning a pleasure and an art.

Those pictures are literally my first ever 15 minutes with a shaper, and only the bottom surface at one end was shaped.

I read somewhere that the top of the clapper box should usually be set away from the face being worked on, although more extreme angles like dovetails seem to differ.

In the example I set the box slightly to the left with a vertical tool and worked across from left to right, but as I say, I’m a total newbie with this tool.

The really important bit, I would say, is to always keep that clapper box and pin well lubricated because it’s such a critical part of the setup.

The main reason I got interested in a shaper is because for me conventional milling is about as much fun as grinding your teeth, i.e. you just want to get it over with as soon as possible.

I also don’t like the high reliance on complicated profile cutting tools combined with relatively high stresses, if something does go wrong it can be a big setback for a hobbyist.

Anyways, we shall see, the main thing is that it does the job, it’s simple and it’s fun.

Short answer is yes, when doing cuts like yours I push the clapper over as far as it will go.

That looks like a number 2 Adept? I have a powered one that is missing it’s original table.

                    Hi Guys
Shapers are great. I have a drummond hand shaper .
I am retired now But i used to use a shaper to shape female half round cavitys in 36″ long cavity plates. Your saying haow it done? Some 1&3/4 dia some bigger
