As an ex Capstan Operator I am used to using the above type of item.
Does anyone know of a similar item to fit my Sieg C3 Lathe ?

I am not up to making Rack and Pinions, but if I could buy something suitable, I may then be able to make something work.

Any suggestions will be most helpful.
      Norm. Williams.

          Hi There
I will talk to Dave Fenner.
He will probably produce a design although it will probably be a lever feed version.
          regards David

            Hi There
We published a lever feed tailstock for the C3 in Model Engineers’ Workshop issue 143.
            regards David

Thanks for reply Dave Clark 1, it would be interesting to see what Dave Fenner thinks, although the one in Issue 143 seems Ok. dependent on the amount of travel available.

              Thanks again,  Norm.

I wonder has anyone wrote up an tatical on a making a capstan feed tailstock for the Raglan range of lathes and what you would need to do to convert a standard tailstock

Sort of coincidence! – I have just finished writing up and photographing a lever feed tailstock for an ML7 which I was thinking of submitting to MEW. It was made from scrap box bits and has served me for a number of years.

                  a) Would it be of interest?

                  b) How does one submit such items?

                  c) I can't draw, so would Crap-o-Cad scribblings suffice?

I've often thought there is enough meat in a mini-lathe tailstock for a rack and pinion feed.

I can only agree with what has been said above.

Also I have been thinking of a solution for a rack and pinion feed tailstock but as a bolt-on accessory and reusing the original parts. It will be most useful for drilling deeper holes amongst other things.

                        /Peter

There are drawings and a write up of an ML7 lever feed tailstock in MEW 16 page 30.
Several years ago I made one similar but with a depth stop on.
I would not go back to a normal tailstock through choice.

I can't find my camera at the mo' to show the real thing, but here's a quick video of the model I drew before construction of the lever-feed barrel for the tailstock

My lathe is a Clarke CL300 and if you notice, I also made a longer barrel, which in conjunction with this modification gives a whopping 72mm of travel for drilling and reaming etc. I'd never go back.

                              Hi Martin

Made a similar gadget to that but modified it to make cotter slots in wheels.

Just for the sake of clarity, the yellow coloured part of the model in my screencast represents the top section of the tailstock. It served no purpose for me to model it all.
