Just bought this but no name or company on the tool or box, seems quite old. Anyone able to identify it and it's purpose?

I agree with Noel it is for measuring sheet material thickness – but it may be specifically intended for measuring the wall thickness of thinwall pipe.

I'd say bore comparator, not sheet material.

I'll take some more photos tomorrow, hopefully they might clarify the action.

Agree with Emgee it’s a bore or groove comparator.

                      Groovy baby!

(It's the pink satin that gives it away!)

                        Some more photos as promised:-

                        verdict dial gauge.jpg

As it's a verdict gauge would it be safe to assume that it's a verdict groove comparitor?

                        accessories.jpg

Full set of accessories plus a couple of odd ones. What would the extra clamp on the right of the pic be for?

Yes a comparator for measuring internal grooves, used one many time and have one with all accessories — I'll take some photos later.

Made or sold by Verdict, would work for bores but there are much better tools available for this.

Some more photos of mine, as you will see there are several probes that can be interchanged to use on very narrow groves and to increase the usable diameter. I use either a calliper or micrometer to make the initial zero, with care they can give good accuracy.

The additional clamp is I believe so the dial gage can be used units own on a scribing block etc.

Nice one John, a few more probes than mine.

I have a similar device without the pistol grip. It is a real PITA to set, and I have little confidence it will hold adjustment. I do have an attachment for my 6" caliper for measuring grooves, provided the diameter is large enough.
