Hi all

A friend in USA has sent me some HSS inserts to try because I happen to mention that I have trouble holding the HSS Tool bits when I need to sharpen them or make a new one due to my gout in both hands but there is a plethora of holders and inserts for that matter, can someone please help me out by suggesting what holders to buy , I want good quality ones somthing like glance I suppose unless there are any cheaper good quality ones , the inserts are here.

I didn’t know it was possible to get HSS inserts but if they work and it means I don’t have to sharpen bits, although he tells me that if they need to be sharpened you just lay them flat on an oiled stone then rub.

is there a set standard foe inserts because all the different letters and numbers seen to be a bit different depending upon where you look.

Hi Dell,

Your first link points to CCMW060204 inserts, if you have a holder for them the HSS inserts should drop right in, as you say they are easy to sharpen. What the codes mean are explained here.

The important bit from the littlemachineshop page is this: ISO: CCMW060204 HSS

That is the International code for the insert. The other code, the ANSI one, is used mainly in the US, but they are complete equivalents.

The carbide equivalent of the HSS insert is CCMT060204, so any holder that will take this insert code will fit what you have.

ArcEuroTrade's own brand holders and the Sumitomo brand they also offer will fit.

You will need to look for something that goes SCxChyyz06 where x is the holder style, h is the hand of the holder, yy is the shank height and width and z the length. The other parts of the code are specific to the insert used, which you already have, and thus do not have a choice.

For instance, a standard, right hand turning and facing holder with a 16mm shank would be SCLCR1616H06

Hi Thor & DC31k

thanks for prompt replies so just to get it sorted in my old thick head , I will need to look for SCLR1010H06 for a 10mm right hand & for SCLCL1010H06 for a 10mm left hand but what about a chamfer tool holder ?.

my QCTP will take 1/2” 12mm but I thought 10mm would give me a bit of up or down adjustment.

The CCMT insert is an 80/100 degree rhombus. Hence 'chamfering' can have two meanings. There is one on eBay that presents the insert 'straight ahead', which has the code SCMCN. That would give you a 40 degree chamfer. Glanze offer one that presents the insert at 45 degrees to achieve the conventional meaning of chamfer. Its code is SCSCR.

The codes you give are correct in principle. There is a 'C' missing from the right hand one (typo.). However, note that in a 10mm shank, the 'H' in the codes you wrote is the length of the holder (100mm). That is not so common in the smaller shank size, so you might have to change that letter to 'E' or 'F'.

Edit: the link you posted is perfect and also illustrates the shank length as 'E'.

I've several of the Glanze holders, work OK for me.

I think those LMS inserts are made by Warner in the US

Yes they are A R Warner so if I get glanze they should out last me .

I have used A.R.Warners sets (tool holder and inserts) for 20 odd years. It seems like they can be offered by Glanze, They are first class. The insert can use a credit card diamond thing and makes the insert brand new and really sharp. They are expensive, but they are worth it. Obviously people will complain about the insert don't have any complex grinding, put they are really worth it even though they are so easy.

i have some Glanze holders coming, expensive but hopefully only have to buy them once , I can just about hold my gravers to grind them because they have a handle but small HSS tool bits I really struggle because of the gout but I don’t think I will have a problem sharpening the Warner bits as they only need laying flat on a oiled stone and rubbed fig 8.

Glad to hear. From memory LMS do toolholder sizes by 1/4" x 1/4" and 3/8" x 3/8" , and 1/2" x 1/2" sizes, I got 3/8" sizes and they are very handy. I also got a couple of sizes for the credit card diamond thing, they can make the top of the insert REALLY good finish!!
