Hi all – With Christmas coming up I have been thinking about suitable pressies which the family might like to give me for use in the workshop and have started to look at tacho meters but the question arises as to which type to consider – contact or a non-contact. A typical application would be for use with the milling machine but I also have a variable speed topslide drilling spindle to consider. Any pearls of wisdom would be much appreciated.

I use a non contact hand held one. also ensures your fingers don't make contact with cutting tools, propellors etc.

For the mill consider wiring one in with a magnetic sensor then you always have the readout and can easily adjust machine to the speed you want

Assume you mean a hand held tachometer to use on different things. A non contact would be best as you cannot always get to the end of a shaft for contact, non contact only needs a small reflector.

You can get the best of both worlds with non-contact tachometer and a contact adaptor. This is just a spindle with target a that fits on the tachometer. The main use is with a wheel for surface speed measurement.

DIY is possible too. You can buy the difficult bits
