      Hi all

Does anyone have any recommendations for decent hacksaw blades, please?

      Thanks,

Thanks guys – just had a look at the link and I'm a bit stunned by the displayed price of nearly £300 for 2 frown

I'm assuming that must be for the 100 pack but it doesn't change if I select other options. I'll proceed further through the buying process and see if it rectifies itself.

They are certainly available at realistic prices

But they won't do themselves any favours by listing them like that surprise

Starrett tools may be good, but I'm not impressed by their website! Tricky to navigate and those prices can't be right! Cromwell are more reasonable. Other sources available.

I buy mine from RS Components. Always choose the "All Hard" rather than the bi-metal flexible type, I've tried the flexible ones and can not cut straight with them and they do not last as long.

You may be right, Dave … The 'reciprocating saw' blades seem to be showing reasonable prices.

Thanks again for all replies, I went with the Starretts from Cromwell. Of course, I just had to add a few other things to make it over the thirty quid required for free postage… (early Christmas presents) wink

I didn't go for the Lenox as I'm heavy-handed enough to break a few.

I've used a variety of brands, but I cannot see the difference in performance between Eclipse brand and Starrett.

Check the RDG tools "Eclipse Section".

However donot buy any of the unbranded blades on the wider marketplace, unless you like chaging blades frequently!!

I got some Eclipse blades from the Midlands engineering exhibition several years ago, they are 1970s old stock told by the vendor. He said they don't make blades like these today, he's correct I still have the same blade on the hacksaw from then. I've got a few cheap blades but they just snap when I used them but the ends come in handy for .5mm grooves on the parting tool.

At the risk of starting an argument over the pros and cons of Eclipse blades, my original reason for asking the question is because I have become totally disillusioned with the performance and longevity of a pack of "Eclipse" blades I have. Now, to be fair, I did buy them from a random stall at a show many years ago, so they may be fakes – do people do that with hacksaw blades?

I can only speak from experiance, the three packs I bought from RDG last well, about the same as the Starrett ones. I cannot quantify that obviously!

Hi, I've use mostly Eclipse blades and are normally the all hard ones, but the bimetal flexible ones are useful when sawing off something in a difficult position as they don't snap quite so easily if they get twisted during the sawing operation. Below is one each of a modest supply that I currently have, the black one was branded Max-Pro, of which I bought 20 packs of 12 at an auction many years ago at a very nice price, they don't match up to any of the ones above it, but do give a reasonable amount of use in general and are worth what I paid for them, I sold a few packs to some of my work mates at the time and gave some to a few close friends and family and I have probably still got half a dozen packs left.

                                              Hacksaw blades.jpg

I don't think I shall every have to buy any more for quite a long while, if ever.

                                              Regards Nick.

P.S. Rob, I think you'll get fakes of just about anything these days, most of the good makes are not exactly cheap.

To round this off, my Starrett Redstripe blades just arrived from Cromwell Tools (and as an aside, remarkably quickly, I ordered in the wee small hours of Monday morning, delivered early Tuesday afternoon) – I've just tried them and the difference to the alleged Eclipse blades I had is chalk and cheese. These are the sort of blades I remember, actually cutting metal without the teeth disappearing in short order. The cut was at a bit of an angle though, but that's just inept operator, I think.

So many thanks to all. Off to the workshop now, happy smiley

Bit late for the OP but I bought a job lot of Rothenberger BiMetal blades at a boot sale about five years ago. The bloke who sold them told me I would not find a better blade. I am on the third one out of a bundle of thirty after all this time. I agree with him – they are the best I've ever used.

I have a good supply of Eclipse all hard blades which I have no complaints about. I think a decent frame is a big factor in sawing accurately as well as a good blade, I bought an eclipse tubular frame when I was an apprentice and it is rubbish, my grandfather’s Eclipse flat bar frame is a joy to use and I also have a Ding Dong solid bar frame that is also very good, I think Ding Dong blades were probably not very good from what I hear but I have never used them. Bahco/Sandvik are very good but again I prefer the all hard version for bench work. Flexible blades are a must for site work or any situation where the item being sawn is less than solidly held. Lube can be useful but can make a mess and stick the swarf to everything.

                                                      Mike
