      Hi All,

I need a small metal cutting bandsaw. Tried the LIDL one, but I guess you get what you're prepared to pay for. Took it back and got a refund.

Has anyone had any experience with the Warco CY90 3.5" Mitre Arm Bandsaw.

It's the right size and comes with a stand, so I won't have to find bench room for it. Could fit a couple of wheels to move it around.

I quite like their 4 1/2" one, especially with the additional table, but it's just a little too big for my needs and workshop space.

I am very pleased with the ALDI one, just take your time with the cut and keep the blade slack between use.

Eats through 25mm 304 stainless easily. just let the weight of the saw do the work.

I have had a Warco CY90 for a number of years and I can honestly say that it's done everything I've asked of it. A few points to note, however. The supplied blade didn't last too long. I replaced it with a bi-metal one from Tuffsaws (Well, two actually for when the first one broke – I'm still waiting for that to happen!) Then I found that its vice is not very good for holding short pieces of material. There are a number of solutions to this common problem. I modified an old drilling machine vice held in the saw vice, like this:

            Mounted on band saw

It copes with the bigger stuff as well and saves physical effort enormously. If I remember correctly, this was a chunk of 75mm diameter BMS:

            The bandsaw earning its keep

The price has gone up considerably since I bought mine, but I still consider it a worthwhile investment.

            John

Just remembered – I had to spend an hour or two, fettling the blade guide bearings etc to get it to cut square.

I had a CY90 but seldom used it because it had to live in a corner and was hard to get out. Also the stand was very flimsy and didn't take very well to fitting castors to move it. Too heavy to lift the saw removed from its stand on to a bench or Workmate. But did cut well.

So eventually I treated myself to the smaller Femi saw, which is highly recommended. Costs quite a bit more but really excellent. Order from Staksys for good price and service.

I've got the CY 90 and like John I get my blades from Tuffsaws in welsh Wales. I have made a few mods to the "vice" to get it to hold stuff better. My only gripe is that when cutting through large sections of steel the motor gets hot then hotter and finally very hot indeed. Its at this point I switch of to avoid spontaneous combustion and continue the next day when things have cooled down a bit.

Its a situation I can live with as I am not bashing metal for a living. I am pleased though that for all its faults it saves me having to suffer the pain of using a hacksaw!

I have the Chester equivalent to the Warco CY90. It's not the best of quality but I got it at the right price so no complaints really. Didn't realise how much I needed one, beats a hacksaw anyday. If I was buying again I would be looking to go up a size, I seem to need to push this one to its limits too often.

Yes they do need a bit of fettling to get them to cut square

I would go with the Femi, too. I love mine. The issue with most bandsaws re cutting small pieces is easily resolved with a sub vice mounted on a strip bent at one end to equal the height of the vice.

I have the Warco CY90. I mounted it on a box with one side open so I can store short lengths of material. The box is on castors and the whole thing low enough to store under a bench. I use it most days. My motor gets hot if running for long periods of time. Now that I have it I wouldn't be without it.

Anyone checked on the motor for its service factor rating? You pay more for continuously rated motors.

The machine does look as though it could be a candidate for a three phase motor transplant – if the rest of the machine build warranted it, quality-wise.

                            Same for me.

I used various angle grinding equipment for fast choppy uppy work but a bandsaw takes the removal of material to a whole new level and with not much heat generated either

I'm very pleased with my Nebes 125 band saw. It's motor is nice and quiet – almost sewing machine quiet and the build quality is reassuring.

It was expensive, but feels like it would last a lifetime.

Bought before leaving the Common Market, it came from here: with free delivery.

That one is a different level entirely

The absence of carry rubber on the pulleys allows the use of the machine with or without lubricants

Many thanks for the comments and suggestions. I had looked at the FEMI bandsaw and other similar models, but none came complete with bench space, so a stand mounted machine it will have to be.

I think the price isn't showing because it must be out of stock at the moment.

I paid €547.74 back in November 2020 and that was delivered from Italy to my door here in blighty.

Years ago, I bought a small bandsaw from Warco. The idea was that it could be stored undewr the bench. It would break a blade almost before it had cut through a piece of 1 1/2" angle iron. Cost me a fortune in blades, no matter how it was adjusted.

The replacement arrived, with paint in a crack in the casting!

I suspect that the problem was that the pulley centres being so close, the blade was twisted too much for it to be durable.

It was replaced by the 4 1/2" version, which once set up has worked very well.

With the blade tension set with a Jacques Maurel tension gauge it cuts well, accurately, and the blades wear out rather than breaking.
