Hi all. I've acquired a MD65 which has an issue with the tailstock spindle screw / sleeve. The sleeve will only screw in freely about half way and then becomes very tight. I've had the assembly in pieces to clean it and there is no obvious damage to the spindle thread. I'm assuming that the thread in sleeve is therefore damaged and was proposing to run a tap through. Does anyone know what the thread size is?

It's 'standard' 8 x1.25mm … ..might be worth 'going in' with a little care, as there were some variations in spec. / detail changes to the machines over the years..

Is the hole still open all the way through and not got something stuck down it?

Check the fit of the key that stops it rotating, it might be a burr where it was snatched during drilling at some time.
Then try a bit of allthread down it as it is a standard thread.
A regular tap isn't going to be very long so you will need to invent a small diameter extended holder – perhaps cut a screwdriver slot in the end.

Thanks! Running a 8 x 1.25mm tap through has sorted it out.
