Can any tell me what this Bench Grinder setup is on the Ryobi bench grinder

The tool rest and wheel type

It's the table from EE's Acute grinding system; wheel is CBN, I believe.

Ask Gary for more information.

I suppose that as a CBN wheel has zero risk of disintegration a guard is superfluous and most of the cut material will be directed downwards. Another good reason to use CBN wheels.

Nice rest though

I dont think Ive every used a CBN wheel. Ive just seen the price. Never worked in a 'money is no object' workshop, I'll be sticking the 'value for money' wheels.

I need new wheels (for HSS) and Id like wider if poss. I suppose Im stuck with the same the the B-grinder has already. None of my tungsten tipped tools with fit the CL500M so thats not a concern.

I have a Diamond Tool Holder which I sharpen on a ordinary bench grinder on the smooth wheel I have a sharpening jig which I think came with the tool holder (I think)

Hi Harry

They look OK but even they are expensive. Jeez I sound like a right cheap B######

I have loads of tools, need to start using them. Im just finishing setting machine up so good to go really.

I was just grinding a bespoke HSS tool on old/abused Bench grinder and it was not good. I need to change both wheels for level/square edges and probably for safety as well. Ive just bought a tool rest, so will do all that when it comes.

I think I have seen somewhere on the site suggestions for 50 grit for rough grinding and 100 grit for finishing the tool.

Anyone with advice on that. Ill probably get from Toolstation/Screwfix

That looks like an electroplated diamond wheel rather than a CBN. It could be electroplated CBN of course but typically the CBN wheels are abrasive mixed into a resin bond and rely on erosion to keep them sharp. Electroplated wheels have a thin coating of diamond fused to a metal carrier.

That is a CBN wheel, electroplated CBN on steel. I've never seen a resin bonded CBN wheel! If you read Gary's stuff he confirms it is CBN.

Thanks for the correction John. CBN is very prevalent in fact a lot of what is called diamond is not natural diamond at all. We use a lot of diamond products at work electroplated and sintered segment.

Danni mine came with a 30 & 60 grit wheels after grinding I do hone as well, maybe not the best way but suits my needs

A question that has been aired before: would a diamond wheel be suitable for dry high speed grinding of steel?

Thanks Michael, new to me!

I invested in one of those large CBN wheels to go with my Acute grinder, got it from Toolpost in Didcot, alas they closed down last September.

There are budget ones Michael, I bought a 8" one for under £50 to use for grinding abrasive stones flat. I also bought a couple of 5" tapered edge ones for my tool & cutter grinder for sharpening hobs. They were just over a tenner each.
