I have an upcoming job which will need quite a lot of knurling. I have a simple push type knurler which is okish for a one off job, but I'm concerned that my WM280 will not like knurling a couple of meters worth of mild steel. Also the knurl quality is so and so unless I push really hard.

I could get a cut knurler such as Quick or Zeus and the likes, but after I checked the prices almost fell off the chair, cannot justfy that price. So I wondered if I could build something myself without breaking the bank. I found a thread where the late John Stevenson showed his home built cut knurler but unfortunately I could not find any details.

Has anyone built such a tool ?

The kindest to the bearings when knurling is to use a clamp type tool, where the work is subjected to pressure from above and below, when the tool is set on the centreline of the work.

Such tools can be bought, or made from a kit, if not totally made in your own shop, apart from the knurling wheels.

Jacques Maral wrote a 2 part article describing such a tool a few years ago – can’t recall if in EIM or ME

Hemingway do a kit based on a reduced version of the Marlco knurler.

The ones I found were push type knurlers, could not find any cut type.

The next best option would be as mentioned by Howard, but I would prefer a cut type as having used one ages ago I remember the quality was near perfect and cut effortlessly.

I built one in the recent past from an article and it must be MEW as its the only one I take but had lots of trouble getting it to work so made the super Hemingway one brilliant and repeatable results.

I have the drawings if you wish them. It knurls from 1/4 inch to 2 inch approx. I have a set of spare knurls for all three cuts to suit. Drop a message if you want them

Making a Knurling tool By Ade

                              Just found this.

By the way i have just ordered one from RDG tonight Clamp type , knurls up to 33mm. £19.95.

Edit. I was going to make one but at those prices it's worth a shot.

                              Steve.
