I have recently been given some tooling. There were a number of smaller items (taps and dies, plus some drills and insert tips) and an unusual 3" Boring and Facing head along the lines of a Wohlhaupter, made by Kuroda Japan. It is missing the knock off stops and a spring loaded detent arrangement. I have looked on line for the manufacturer but they now appear to be into ball screws and plastics and presswork equipment.

By any chance does anyone have an instruction manual and/or a parts list?

The model description is UFB-3 MT-3 M10 which amply describes it. The serial number is 7412823.

            Martin,

If, as it seems, the Kuroda is a clone of the Wohlhaupter and you can identify the missing items, I have the parts list in my archive. Here it is, jpegged:

            upa3 parts list_1

            upa3 parts list_2

Hopefully, you can read them OK, or, if need be, I can send the original by email, if you PM me your email address.

            John

Edit: The patent , which runs to 8 pages, also contains a lot of detail, as you would expect and is obtainable on the 'net, although I have a copy of that, too, if you haven't already got it.

                  Gentlemen,

Thank you one and all for your responses which were better than I had any right to expect. I do have a Wohlhaupter 2" B&F head and this 3" model certainly looks to be a close clone of it.

As a precaution I have sent an email request to Kuroda with the tool details to see if they have anything in their archives. Worth pursuing with the manufacturer but the responses here may make that an unnecessary effort.

                  John – PM sent!

                  Thanks again,

                  Martin

                    Martin,

                    You have mail!

Another YouTube video that I found interesting was by Finno Ugric (yes, really) machining. See here. It comprehensively covers that strip-down and rebuild of a Wohlhaupter, giving a number of useful hints and tips along the way.

It just so happens I made a replacement pair of stop-dogs for my UPA2 last week. Happy to send you over the drawings if they're any use?

                          Thank you Stuart,

Earlier today John Hinkley kindly sent me his collection of Wohlhaupter documents and now Stuart even supplies a ready made drawing for the missing stop dogs. What a brilliant Forum – thanks again everyone.

I have also received a very polite reply from Kuroda this morning, which was extremely apologetic and informed me they had stopped making the UFB heads over 30 years ago, that they had divested their manual tools division 6 years ago. They did say that they would approach the company that bought the rights to all their manual tooling on my behalf, as all the archive material for these heads was transferred at the time of sale. They will request to see if they currently have a manual and parts diagram for my UFB. What a service!
