I have been after one of these for ages, and have just managed to find one.

However the little drill setting fixture is missing from the set, does anyone happen to have one they could measure up for me so I can make one.

It is shown in fig 3 of the instruction sheet.

I could work it out, but thought I would ask first.

      Thanks

      Phil

Set the drill so the arm is parallel to the stone. If you need a jig the set point just needs to be at the level of the wheel.

In the picture it looks to me as if the drill extends further than that required to make the frame parallel to the stone.

I will wait till it arrives and take some measurement I think.

                Thanks

                Phil

We will have a nice design (with usage guide) in the next MEW.

Here you are, Phil. As measured from mine in imperial [metric].

                      Hi Rod

That is exactly what I was after, thanks for taking the trouble.

Just out of curiosity, when the drill is in position is the wishbone frame dead parallel to the stone as was suggested earlier ?

Or to put it another way, does the outside of the wishbone have an angle of 118°. The 25° angle of the jig suggests a wishbone angle of 130°

                      Thanks

                      Phil

Good point, I assumed the wishbone was reflecting the desired angle but of course there is the point that not all drills have the same point. Never thought to measure it. I must make a jig myself and resharpen a few drills then. smile p

The gauge rests against the arm:

                          wishbone 1.jpg

whereas the drill angle depends on the the projection of the wheel:

                          wishbone2.jpg

Getting close to 118 degrees – looks like I could have opened the gauge out a little more judging by the LH wheel. Anyway, according to Tubal Cain in "Drills, Taps and Dies", the angle is not that critical.

                          HTH,

                          Rod

You put the relief on by leaning the holder to one side so it's all a 'by feel' operation anyway.

My wishbone sharpener arrived at work today, and just out of curiosity I borrowed a vernier protractor to measure the frame angle.

Guess what……..It is 118°, so you were indeed correct about having it parallel to the stone.

The bonus was that the little jig the seller told me was missing, was actually wrapped up inside the instruction sheet, so I don't even need to make one of those now either.

I will give it a try out this evening when I get home from work.

Have looked on eBay for this sharpener but nothing like it appears apart from the 'Picador' 'Spiralax' type, can you provide a link for this 'Wishbone sharpener'

There was an article on making and using a wishbone sharpening jig in MEW, April 2004.

Have found it; issue 251, the problem is that Adobe flash is not supported any longer & I cannot open digital issue to retrieve dwgs. This is a flaming nuisance! Is MTM going to address this point?. My renewal is due soon, am I to no linger to be able to access long time back digital issues, if so what is the point of renewing subscriptions if I can no longer refer to back issues. Can moderators look into this?. Does anyone have access to issue 251 & possibley down load article & forward via mail.

Sorted, have to go through 'Pocket mags' web site, sign in to registered MEW a/c then can access digi back issues; convoluted way of going about it !
