I am having difficulty removing the gearbox top plate on a Meddings MF4 – I have removed everything above the plate including the two circlips (outer and inner) on both shafts, but when I lift the gearbox plate, the shafts do not want to detach. I assume this is because the roller bearings are a very tight fit on both the gear plate and the shafts – is this correct and if so what is the best way of getting them to detach? Thanks for any help, Adam

I do have the exploded parts diagram for M series Meddings drills and I am wondering if I should be trying to remove the selector shaft that is gripped by the selector lever and then just pull the whole gear assembly out attached to the top gear plate but to do so is not obviously possible since the selector shaft appears held firmly in place by a clamping bolt that is only accessible once the top plate is removed.

Hi, Can I ask you you removed the input pulley. Is it on a taper bush? Mine looks like it is but I can't for the life of me get the taper bush out of the pulley. The half hole in the pulley doesn't line up with half threaded hole in the pulley, it is approx 45 degrees out. I have drilled and threaded 2 M4 holes into the top face of the bush and made up a little pulley to pull up on the bush and push down on the pulley, but all it has done is bend the mild still bar that I used. Am I doing something very wrong?

                Adam,

I need to examine and possibly repair the gearbox of a meddings M5. Before I remove the top plate, could you possibly share that exploded parts diagram and any further useful information you may have? Many thanks, Brian

Brian if you PM me an email address I can send you a pdf with some useful information, it is for the M4 but I think the gearbox is common to the M5.

The gearbox top on mine was stuck down solid with red gasket sealer.
