Sorting some tips out yesterday from job lots bought over the years and got these.

      Anyone recognise them ?

Doesn't show up very well in the pic but the radius and nose are ground as opposed to just being pressed in a mould.

The code on the box is for a triangular insert – so I guess these have been modified to a 'special' (or are in the wrong box).

I was thinking Ninja stars when I first opened the thread

Looks like there's a slight taper to the bottom edge on that RH one, Could they be for threading with a special profile .e.g worm gear?

                Ed.

They might do a butress thread. Or would be handy for making your own broaches

One day one might get a sensible answer on this forum when all the school boy a gone to bed if someone ask a question they expect a descent replay not a load of schoolboy drivel. Rant overangry

Well I did give a couple of proper possibilities

Butress form seems to fit quite well with the shape

And if plunged in with the cross slide would cut quite nice teeth for a broach blank, easier to see the similarity in shape when looking at a keyway broach

The code is for a triangular turning tool, with chip breaker, in a high grade. (http://www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-gb/products/pages/productdetails.aspx?c=tpmr%20221-53%202025)

They look an awful lot like the shim to go under an internal threading tip to me, and the grey colour also suggest the "lower" grade these shims are normally made from. Example (http://www.shop-apt.co.uk/shims-seats/yi4-shim-for-22nr-22el-threading-inserts.html). Having three points though does make me wonder if they might even be threading tips?

                          Hope this helps!

                          Richard

Im erring on the side of Ninja Stars for very little people, smile p They are definitely for thread type cutting as opposed to general machining but exactly what thread would be impossible to say without measuring one.

You picked up on the pigeon English, it was intended.

Pidgin – but I doubt the schoolboy humour will be lost on JS.

You could use them as pigeon caltraps John, keep the winged rats off the roof

Do look like buttress thread form to me.

Close Brian but not quite, those have straight angles sides [ if that makes sense ] probably for ACME.

Mine has curve at the front, curve on the nose and straight on the back.

Probably that special I'll never find out what they are, mind you be happy at £22 a box as i must have 40 boxes or so.

Looks like a standard tip has been ground for a special job. John did mention ground rather than simply pressed.
