When made an ER 32 chuck for my small lathe I turned a piece from my scrap box to fit into one of my collets and put a Dial Indicator in the top slide tool post and adjusted the top slide to be parallel to the taper of the collet. I then mounted the collet chuck on the lathe spindle and turned most of the taper. Before the finishing cuts I used the marking blue method to check the taper and adjust. Harold Hall describes another method here, he used it for turning Morse tapers but the principle is the same.
