And no I was not being a hooligan.! no

Cheap tools. – Are they worth it.? I am fast coming to the conclusion they are more trouble then they are worth.

I also have a tool holder (from the same supplier) that has more movement in it than a New Orleans harlots hips on a Saturday night.

You pays yer munny and you takes yer chances with the cheep tools

I've had some great bargains as well as a few lemons, and as the usage is only amateur most stuff suffices

you might be able to replace the broken bit with a length of silver steel

Nothing wrong with inexpensive but cheap is a different matter! I find inexpensive tools from the 'usual suppliers' generally OK; some of the 'best' are just too expensive for my budget.

I can't be certain from your photograph, but that looks remarkably like a 'brittle fracture', and the material looks like cast iron. … If I'm right, it's an "interesting" and "economical" choice of material.

Brittle fracture can occur in large items as well as small, scary bit I think I worked on a similar vessel if not this one in the early 70'stanker%20aft.jpg

I am far from being a metallurgist but I would say you are right.

It happened while I was taking a 20 thou cut in en3. Tool was sharp and producing nice swarf so it was not as if it was under load with the tool bulldozing its way along. – It just, it seems gave up.

I agree it looks to me to be poor or incorrect heat treatment, most probably a crack has developed during the quenching process. Or it could have been incorrectly tempered and tempering embrittlement has occurred. This happens at certain temperature bands on alloy steels where the tempering process causes the material to become more brittle even though the tempering temperature is going higher,

Normaly as the temperature rises the steel become softer and more ductile but as I once heard said on t'other side of the pond Mother Nature threw us a curved ball ! Thus certain, mainly alloy steels have this feature, if my memory is good it's mainly between 240 & 330 deg C but there is great deal more to it than just avoiding this band of temperature and my memory of this is a little dim, I know what I need to know for the heat treatment I do now and anything more I would have to dig out the books of 50 years past !

It does look like a brittle fracture, and on my photo looks like it started from an edge fault, but no use knowing that. It probably is just bad luck, how many are made and how many fail? I've had top quality stuff fail as well as cheap.

But is the Gepy a slim body, looks to me like a standard sort of dia body which would be about 40mm on Nicks MT3 rather than the 25mm of his slimbody which won't allow you to get in so close.

I like cheap tools. I bought an angle grinder from B&Q it cost £18 and came with a 2 year guarantee. After 2 months of heavy work it burnt out, I returned it and it was replaced. 6 months later the replacement burnt out, I took it back but the did not have any replacements in stock. They returned my money. That's not bad, 8 months use of an angle grinder for free! I will certainly buy another.
