      GH 1224 Centre supports off centre

        2014-10-20 20.28.48.jpgHi everyone, I am looking for advice – constructive preferable

        Bought my Warco lathe several years ago and never had need to use any of the supports until now

        Have a look at the photo's

        the fixed support/steady is out by 5mm

        the travelling steady is out by 10mm in the other direction

        obviously I should have checked these when I purchased the machine years ago so I know its my fault but if possible I would like to know if a solution can be found that enables me to use them

          On the fixed steady make sure there is no paint of filler under where it sits on the bed, mine had quite a buildup which threw it off line.

          On teh traveling one I would drill out the mounting holes and fit a couple of eccentric bushes so it can be bolted back in a better position

            Hi Jason, Thanks for the quick reply, yes the fixed steady does have a lot of filler and I am just figuring out how best to mount it on the milling machine to clean it up, I was also thinking if it would be possible to make an off set to the top Brass part in order to bring it more in line.

            The travelling steady fixing points are too close to the main bed to allow for re drilling so I was thinking of slotting the casting holes but again I haven't figured out how to hold the piece or if its even possible

            Don't you just love Chinese machines!!!! especially when I make such a basic mistake of not checking the parts

              You should not need to mill the filler away, bit of sandpaper on a wooden block will soon have it back down to the metal.

              To mill the traveling one put a sacrificial packer under the mounting area and then pack up under the two supports to bring it level, clamp over the supports and the bottom of teh casting. Its easy enough material to machine, I enlarged the opening on my fixed steady with no problem

                  Contact Warco, they sold the parts which are not 'fit for purpose', they are liable. I believe there is a 6 year time limit on this.

                    Yes but it was probably on the boat for 5 years.

                     

                    I know it looks bad but if it's any consolation because it's 3 point and does meet the work at some point it will do it's job.

                     

                    I know this as when I had my Myford I 'found ' a very nice fixed steady that came off the support end of a warp knitting machine. It was beefier than the Myford one in being bigger capacity and had adjustable fingers, even the tenon fitted.

                     

                    Problem was it wasn't in the centre. I didn't think Karl Mayer in Germany would take it back as not fit for purpose as it wasn't made for a Myford wink

                     

                    High up on my to-do list was to take some off one side of the tennon and add a strip to the other side – Never happened and this got some serious use in it's day.

                      Or just shove a feeler gauge under one side of the Vee, as you can see here.smiley

                      As the diameter of the work goes up the position of the three fingers becomes less important anyway

                        Unfortunately I have had the lathe for just over 7 years
