I have a mill with Align power feed units on X and Y, they work OK but I have one problem with them.

The feed adjustment knob is in the centre of the forward reverse lever but when using this as a power feed on various jobs going forward, change part, go back, rinse and repeat, even though I take care not to touch the speed knob the handle movement upsets it and alters the feed rate.

Done a web search for this problem but not found anything but I can't be the only person to have this ?

One is worse than the other as the knob is freer. I'm thinking it really needs to have the knob remote from the traverse lever. ?

Perhaps one of the weak Locktights applied then broken would gum it up enough to prevent the movement.

            Hi John,
I have not seen one of these feed units so I had a look for the manual and found it here. looking at the picture of the forward reverse lever with the speed control in the centre I suspect the speed knob may be rubbing on the side of the depression in the forward reverse lever so that when the lever is moved it moves the speed control.Possibly some swarf has got in the gap. I suspect that the speed control knob is just a press fit on the potentiometer shaft. If so try removing the knob to see if this stops the problem occurring. From the parts list the pot is 10k ohm. (It will probably be a linear pot.) so if you have room you could fit a speed control somewhere else.

            Les.

The only thing I would add to the comments made by Les is that the potentiometer is indirectly connected to the mains input supply and if relocated it would need to be well isolated and protected from the local environment including you!!

              Cheers

Hi John, if there's a gap behind the speed control knob could you possibly add a wavy washer or shallow compression spring to give a bit of extra friction?

                Ed.

I fitted an AL-500X to my clone and haven`t seen this problem. The central know seems to be clear of the handle (no rubbing), although mine`s only a year or so old and won`t be getting the proper use you give yours..

Given that this is presumably a fairly std pot with a knob fitted to it, have you tried loosening the grub screw and sliding the knob out a few mm to give clearance? You could also check for swarf and gunge in there.

As for stiffening up the movement, they usually just use some form of grease on the shaft. You probably can`t easily replenish it. Perhaps if you can remove the knob, you may be able to fit a wave washer between the back of the knob and the housing to stiffen the motion up.

Edit – sorry, Ed, there`s a bad echo in here!

Posted this same post over on the American forum as they are probably more common over there and it appears that now I have mentioned it, it is a common problem.

Various suggestions have been made like changing to a locking pot which defeats the object of quickly adjusting on the fly.

Without stripping I don't think the wavy washer will work as only the shaft sticks thru and the backing the washer will bear on is the lever which will only make it worse. Set speed in neutral, twice as fast one way, twice as slow in reverse.

I do have a spare unit so when I get a moment I'll have a furkle round and see what's involved to move it to a different location.

Although mine gets serious use, it's a daily drive, both these feeds have been like it from day 1.

John. I don’t know the part you are mention ing..
..I have seen simular for hydraulics…all mechanical..

Anyway..if I understand you have a control handle for fwd/reverse and concentric with that a pot. That does the speed..could you replace the pot knob with a locking type..the catch operates on the mounting spigot of the pot and locks the shaft relative to that spigot…

Yes a common enough problem together with the knob on the end of the Fwd/Rev shaft also breaks too readily. The Soft yellow rubber cover for the Rapid (higher speed) push switch picks up oil from grubby hands and then falls apart.

                        Ah well.
