So, I have been trying to start this "project" for a while now. My old and trust grinder is just not up to some of the jobs I want to do. I have no intention of building one of the commercial offerings, no, I am going to take the easy route and build my own!

So, I have amassed a collection of bits. The motor is a 2/3 horse single phase, there is a 1/3 horse three phase inverter, a headstock and spindle from a C3, a pair of ground bars, a saddle and cross slide from a C3, the clamp nut and leadscrew from a C3, a large cast iron flat table, a holder that takes a collet with an indexing ring some M2 taper tollholders a bit of bar with some holes in – you get the idea. This is what I am using right now:

This is the collection of bits I have:

This is what I would like to end up with:

What do you think? Will it fly?

The Cincinnati might fly, but it would need about 20,000 square feet of wing, and two 1200 HP engines to do it.

          Sorry couldn't resist.

Good luck with the grinder project.

I reckon you're in with a good chance, Graham

… Might find a few ideas herein.

I must admit, it did conjure a picture Jeff

Anyhow, one of the things I am considering is putting the motor and spindle together – dare I say it, in the manner of a Quorn – and making it moveable up and down a column using the leadscrew?

The bars are 16mm and I have found a number of 16mm linear pillow blocks at very reasonable money so I could mount the saddle on them making it easily adjustable, One of the things I really need to sharpen are some quite long MT1 and MT2 drills. I know, I do sharpen them freehand but sometimes make a dogs dinner of it if I am in a rush.
