Changing grinder wheels for different size – advice required

I'm hoping to change one of the standard Aluminum Oxide wheels on my bog-standard B&Q bench grinder for a Silicon Carbide wheel for grinding carbide tools. However the originals are 150 x 16mm on a 1/2" spindle whereas the only Silicon Carbide I can find are 150 x 20mm, although there's plenty of room within the housing for a thicker wheel.

Are there any risks associated in substituting a larger wheel of this size? (Or any other advice on the subject for that matter)

Sticking my neck out here….. but not a lot more expensive is to go for a diamond grit wheel.

The difference between diamond and green grit is the same as chalk and cheese!

Diamond even on a metal hub is probably going to be lighter than solid grit.

Apart from the usual safety advice re. hanging a new wheel.
Green grit wheels “shed”more than uusual. .its part of how they work…
So are particularly dusty..

Bonded diamond wheels (for carbide) cut better and cleaner. Don’t need truing (can’t be trued, so get the bushing right)..
I would still ring a diamond wheel but then though I have seen the result of a wheel bursting I have never heard of a diamond wheel bursting…

The only things to look out for are

Speed rating on wheel is same or lower then grinder, this is more a problem with larger diameter.

Make sure you put paper packing's ether side of washers don't over tighten and make sure of a full nut.

Make sure the rest is no more than 1/16" from stone.

You might have to trim the new stone as to balance them.
