So, as some of you may have seen, I acquired a lovely Elliott Drill Press. I decided a full strip and rebuild was in order so reduced the thing to it's component parts today and took most of them off to the shot blasters.

However, I am now a bit stuck. The pinion and pinion shaft are still in there and I really don't want to destroy the casting at this stage. I have no book, manual or instructions. It was pretty straightforward basic engineering with the usual well laid traps – Left hand threads, second grub screws behind the grub screw you just removed but can't immediately see – that sort of thing.

But now things are at a halt. I gave it "some Wellie" with a lead mallet but there were no signs of movement. Has anyone had one of these apart?

One thing you will notice – in the top picture – there appears to be a recess for a Halogen type lamp. I will be putting a nice LED lamp in there and using the original motor on/off switch placement as the switch for the light (please note – I will not be using the original switch, it will just appear to be.). I will be fitting a VFD to this.

What about taking the boss off the other side (probably pinned in place through the boss and shaft) and gently tapping from the other side. I'dbe surprised if wellying was required.

Looks to me that the pinion will come out of the bore with the bearing – but the other side looks a bit smaller than that.

Graham,

When I reached a similar point with my little Jones & Shipman drill, I had to heat the casting [with a Hot Air gun] before I could move the pinion shaft [with a Nylon/Lead-Shot hammer].

… Might be worth a try.

Snag is Will – I can't find any sign of a pin. I will scrape some paint off.

I tried a few blows with a lead hammer Michael, but I am concerned that I was trying to drive it out the "wrong" side. Given I don't know which side it comes out. A drawing would be helpful at this point I think.

Although Elliott is essentially British and this llink **LINK** is mostly american it is the biggest collection of rebuilt drills on the planet. So someone on it might have an idea.

I have a progress 3 which is geared ( is yours ?) but it looks similar. I can get into the workshop tomorrow morning and check that one for you and see if I can help further.

I have had it to bits in the past so it should be obvious once I look at it again.

Hi Graham

I've just had a look at mine – yes boss comes off. Its is pinned with a single 1/4" pin through the boss and shaft. Mine is a straight pin through both sides of the boss.

The shaft is about 3/4" diameter under the boss and the pin hole is drilled 15mm from the end of the boss. The pin is alighned with one of the holes for the arms. May help find it.

looking at mine there is no way that the pinion and shaft will come apart any other way but from tapping out from that side

Will, further to your suggestion – I found the pin. It wasn't easy as it is under a good deal of paint. I have given it a few "taps" – it is in there Will use a bit of heat on Monday.

Only just seen this but yes, mines pinned as well. I can't check as it's in storage at the moment but pretty sure it had a domed head like a rivet so if you could grip it, it could be pulled out. I only mention this in case it's a blind hole!
