Some of you may not have come across this 3rd world development site with publications which might be of interest (e.g. folding machine). Thought I should post it here:

In the late 80s I used to know a chap who worked in 'appropriate technology'. He'd worked with the Maasai, as they were abandoning their nomadic lifestyle they were having terrible problems with high CO levels in their homes which were not really suited to permanent stoves, so a suitably versatile stove design with good flue arrangements was urgently needed.

A bit of googling found this, so I'm not imagining it!

Thanks for the heads up. My bro-in-law wrote the foot operated drill book while working for Intermediate Technolgy in Botswana. This one is not, perhaps, particularly relevent to model engineering but I found it interesting that while some of the fundamental tools were not available, every village could muster up a welder.

I knew 'appropriate technology' was wrong!

I guess the local welder fills the same role as the old village blacksmith.
