I bought a nice set of small metric combination spanners by Bergen (4mm to 10mm). I am having trouble finding a set of something similar in imperial : starting at 1/8 inch or even smaller. Does anybody know who makes an imperial set of combination or open ended spanners ?

I got some 11ba ones from Rufforth car boots sale. However Proops brothers ( on internet) list ba spanners down to 11ba.

                Not ring spanners but OK.

When I needed some BA spanners for the Stuart Turner S9 rebuild, I had one 4 BA open ender, I needed a couple of other sizes, and a pair of each, so I made my own out of some little bits of scrap, then polished them up a bit, and heated them blue, I think they look OK, and they do the job. They look good for getting into tight and awkward spots.

                      Brian,

I assume you are in the UK? My experience is that imperial AF spanners fit nothing. You will need either Whitworth spanners (for BSW or BSF) and BA spanners for the smaller sizes. For BA I've got spanner sets by Britool and Terry. The Britool ones are chrome plated and very nice- they look like miniature full size spanners. But the ones I use most are the Terry ones which are stamped out of sheet but are thinner and generally easier to get into tight spots. Whether these are still available is another matter.

I live in Cairns, Australia. There is very little available here. I buy everything I need from the Uk or the US.

OK. I think that imperial AF spanners will fit US size fastenings – perhaps someone will confirm.

If using Whitworth and BSF, it's worth noting that Whitworth nuts, and bolt-heads, were originally "one size larger"

                                e.g. a 1/4" Whitworth spanner fit a 5/16" BSF nut or bolt.

… Whitworth were later down-sized, to match the BSF.

                                  Brian,

Amazon list quite a range of BA spanners in a number of different styles including open ended , combination and box spanners.

there used to be a place in nottingham market that sold them loose for less than a pound and all top grade in both imperial and metric down to 12BA (very useful as most of the hex stuff in the smaller BA sizes is now metric).

                                    cheers,
