Having just recently got myself a drummond round bed lathe minus the chuck, I am now looking for a chuck that would fit. Does anyone know what type of chuck would fit on this drummond lathe?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

          Andy,

You will need to provide any new chuck you buy for this lathe with a back plate. You may be lucky and find a second-hand one already fitted with a suitable back plate but beware as it may be old and not in them best of condition.

I made a cast iron back plate for my Drummond flat bed lathe from a part finished casting and fitted it with a 4" TOS three jaw chuck that has proved to be totally satisfactory.

if you can only stretch to a single chuck them go for an independent 4 jaw one (about 4.5" diameter) as this can do every thing a 3 jaw can and much more. Centring round stock in a 4 jaw is quick and simple with a little practice and a DTI. You will still need a back plate.

A good chuck is the heart of a lathe so it is worth getting a good quality one such as TOS or I understand the Zither ones from India are very good budget chucks – try ARC or Chronos asking for them by name.

          Good luck.

          Eric

Cant seem to get pictures downloaded but here are some dimensions of chuck spindle. Diameter 19mm, Length 23mm and there are 8 threads. The only markings I can see on the lathe are MCH.A and under that 2783.

If anyone can help that would be great

                  Hi Andy

Unless someone has modified your lathe – forget metric dimensions – they are made to good old imperial. The spindle thread where the chuck fits should be 3/4 inch BSW (10 tpi). The MCHA 2783 is the serial number and a check or enquiry on the "Drummond Lathes" Yahoo group should give you a year of manufacture. You'll also find a lot of information about these machines and the other Drummond lathes on Tony Griffiths website – http://www.lathes.co.uk.

As Eric (Lampton) above says if you've got the backplate then you can fit a chuck to that – the backplate may need some machining to accept the new chuck, but you can do that on your lathe as the backplate should ideally be machined on the spindle that it's going to be used with.

You'll find that the round beds are a bit idiosyncratic in that the cross slide and top slide are effectively merged into one – that can lead to a bit of head scratching when you come to work out machining operations and sequences, but they are still capable machines. They also have an advantage when you come to mount them in that it is virtually impossible to induce a twist into the bed, unlike most girder type construction lathes. I've mounted mine with the bolt in the tail end mounting casting, that nips on to the lathe bed, deliberately loose so that there isn't any twist.

Good luck with your machine, I hope you get a lot of pleasure from using it.

                  Keith
