In the 1970s, there was a series in the ME called "First Affair with a Lathe" by Derek Beck. I made his simple rear toolpost to take a parting off blade (transformed parting off for me); a handle to rotate the chuck slowly (great for screwcutting); an accessory enabling me to rotate the top slide to 27 1/2 and 30 degrees (even better for screwcutting as it eanbles the tool to cut on one side only) and a suggestion regarding knife tool angles enabling me to take 100 thou deep cuts on my Myford.

I think it would be good for beginners to have access to Derek's series and suggest that ME Workshop reprints them. Is anybody else familiar with Derek's series and thinks the same as me?

I made a device for rotating the chuck slowly from an ally record deck turntable which had an expanding mandrel to lock it into the bore of the quill. I engraved the OD 360 degree grads and also 100 grads per rev. Made to plans from the net somewhere.

It took me ages to engrave but I let it go with the mini lathe I sold last year (why? – I dunno, you do daft things at times), have regretted it ever since.

                    Hi Hansrudolf,

No, I'm not addicted to oxygen free cables or green felt pen on my CDs either!

I agree with Nobby – a handle is a very useful accessory. It takes all the stress out of those occasions where it is vital that you release the clasp nut at the just right moment!

I think mine took a mornings work and I made it up as I went along. The large knurled knob avoids over tightening and a light blow with the heel of the hand releases the cone shaped nut from the taper. If you are going to make one however don't forget the little pin which fits in one of the slots and stops the nut rotating. I don't have the sprung loaded feature that Nobby does but I do remove the drive belt from the pulleys when using it.

A worthwhile exercise between projects – I dread to think what the price of the "pukka" item might be!
