looking for a tool

A friend gave me a tool for grooving the face of a bit of round steel… It works great… I have however gone a little heavy by turning handle wrong way, and its snapped.

The tool is a round tapered steel part with a tiny grub screw to hold blade… the blade itself is small.. about 2mm wide and 2-3mm deep and extended around 6mm from the holder.

Its not a proper lathe tool, but i got in in and it did the job well, until the dipstick kicked in!

I'll try n get a picture of it sorted, but if anyone has any idea what i mean and know where to get one please let me know.

Probably something like Cutwell call a Microscope tool part way down the page, the micro face groover sounds like what you describe. But could just a seasily be homemade with a bit of HSS toolsteel in the end

Well I've been searching for days.. Took my broken tool to all the places in Lincoln I could find and nobody could even identify it… So been online looking for somthing that will do the job. lots of companies seem to have great tools Sandvik, iscar and thinbit all have great tools and a lot look like what i need… When it comes to trying to buy one, it becomes a little more difficult. No mention of suppliers or where to purchase anywhere.

It seems a little crazy to develop a web-site with all the information on how great something is and to leave out the infomation that is needed to purchase the item.

If anyone can point me to a good tool supplier that has these available please send me a link.

Rick put a picture or two up as its almost impossible to guess what you are describing. Is it anything like teh link I posted above?

A quick e-mail to any of the makers will give you a local stockist or distributor who can get it in. Sandvik have a page to locate a dealer here

If I have understood your query correctly, it appears that what you have (had) is what "littlerick" was after in his thread "making square groove on end of round bar". You might get a few ideas from reading that. You can search for the phrase in parentheses under thread search. Good luck.

John if that was aimed at me then I know what rick is (was) trying to do. It does not help with his poor description of the tool, I linked to one that retains a cutting tool in a holder with a grub screw which is basically what Rick describes. However there are several other types of end grooving tools and without a picture its very hard to point rick in teh right direction as it could just as easily be one of teh following types all of which answer his description.

Well the sandvik one is basically the same type of tool as in my first reply, you can buy straight from Cutwell. I have also given you the contact details for Sandvik so you could ask them for a local stockist.

If you put up a picture of the broken tool we may even be able to suggest where you can buy just a replacement tip rather than a complete tool holder and tip as all three in your links ar different.

Cmon guys, no hissy fits please… Its my fault for the not to good description of what i need… and as Jason has kindly demonstrated, im not too good at adding stuff to posts either lol.

The tool I have is closer to the one in the top picture only a little more home made. Anything like the above will do the job, cost also a BIG factor, what with the wife n that… Looking so far my best bet is a bench grinder and some tool steel and try to make my own. Thats another post eh!

The bit that is broken is like the top pic, as in its a 4mm steel tool slotted into a hole and fixed with a grub screw. I did find a site that had the bit for sale at £12, however mid way through making an order my electric went out and i have been unable to find the bloody web-site that was selling it… Before anybody suggests internet history, i turn it all off and dont keep record.

Rick your easiest and cheapest option is to buy a piece of 4mm round HSS toolsteel ( make sure its not 5/32" ) and just grind up the end, you can then stick that in what sounds like a homemade holder from your friend.

I'll have a look around for a readymade carbide tip but its not going to be as cheap as the HSS option

Sorry if I've trodden on anybody's toes. Now I've re-read the thread I see that the OP is the same person who started the thread I suggested he look at for ideas! So he'll end up chasing his tail. I wasn't "aiming" at anyone – just trying to be helpful. Should have read it more carefully. I'll get back in my box.

Thanks for info guys and I think a grinder is the next purchase.. Seems making tools is probably best way to learn… and now i've seen a couple of prices of the above… Rather expensive things to break!
