I'm after a set of Er40 collets and not sure which ones to get. Rdg do sets, Gloster tools, Chronos have sets along with Vertex ones which are supposed to be better quality. Any advice welcomed.

Will also need to make a Lathe er collet chuck. Could you tell me a good place to buy enough EN8 bar to do the job.

I've bought some er32 collets from these guys and they seem as good as any: **LINK**

They do also sell ER40 size.

For quality look for the value they quote as the TIR value: the smaller the better, 0.0002" is good. If they don't quote it. don't be surprised if it is not very good.

Suggest you give Dave of D&J Workholding **LINK** a call. Very helpful chap. Most certainly not the cheapest, BUT excellent German quality options and massive range incl ER 40. They also do many types of holders including parallel and MT. Suggest better to buy than to start making.

Another vote for CTC Tools very good quality excellent price certianly good enough for clock repair they take a while to arrive a couple of weeks normally but then they are coming from Hong Kong.

I'll second Russell's suggestion. I bought an ER32 MT3 collet chuck and ten collets from them in July. Cost me £66.25 including courier delivery. They arrived on my doorstep (in France) four days after placing the order. I assume they'd take the same for the UK, if that's where you are (no profile). If you email them, they'll send it by post, I imagine – but it'll take a lot longer. The ones I bought weren't the low runout jobs but their precision far exceeds what I can acheive with my experience on my equipment!

I,m unsure what the TIR stands for, is it a total run out ?

TIR = Total Indictated (or Indicator) Runout ( I always knew it as Total Indicated Runout)

It is the absolute value of the difference between the high and low reading as seen (usually) on a dial indicator, but could be measured by other means.

Measured practically it will include the effects of eccentricity as well as out-of-roundness, roughness etc.

For a collet I would expect it to relate to the bore of the collet when correctly mounted in it's holder.

The lower the figure the better really BUT the higher the price will be.

TIR always intrigued me..at what projection is that quoted for…
If collet is say absolutely ( ) true but has say 2 thou runnout..then center of tool will describe a circle 2 thou in diameter…hole drilled will be 2 thou larger than expected ( right! your drill /cutter is that well ground. .. you wish ) if on the other hand the collet holds non parallel. .the effect will now vary with “depth” ()
