Its usual to use a backplate between the chuck and spindle. To get them accurate you will need to turn it on your own lathe.

Here's a description of making/ adapting a backplate for a chuck, hope you find it useful. Lathes.co.uk also describes this. If you want to be able to adjust the chuck, look here.

on one of links he used aluminium to make a backplate.

would 6082 be good enough for purpose as can get that from noggin ends in a suitable diameter, or should i only use steel.

if steel can anyone recomend a supplier for a pce of 6" diameter 1" long pls.

                cheers.

You can get blank cast iron backplates from the likes of RDG if it is a screwed nose on your lathe but I'm suspecting it is bolt on. Is the current one as thick as 1 in? No need to make it thicker than that.

The usual material is cast iron, several people do blank castings, try College Engineering, I've used their backplates both 5" & 6"
