I bought recently a set of imperial collets with a drawbar. The thread on the collets appears to be M16 x1. The collets have some age to them and one is marked "Prost. Chicago". Is M16 x 1 a standard thread for collets?

          Mick,

I would not think that old American collets would have a metric thread. If you have access to a reasonably modern Machinery's Handbook (mine is 26th edition) there are comprehensive lists & drawings of standard collets all with imperial threads. One very common collet is the 3C with a thread size of 0.640" x 26 tpi that is very close to what you have measured.

Don't know about M16x1 excecpt it appears to be a standard metric "attachment" thread for model engineers (Model Engineers handbook, Tubal Cain).

0.642 in. 26 tpi seems to be the standard thread for 3C collets, so you might need to do some vary careful measuring especially if there is a possibility of wear.

Could be Deckel tool & cutter grinder collets.

Well done gents and thank you……..funnily enough, I measured these collets at 0.640" ish and my thread gauge also made it 26tpi……but as I could not find this thread in my limited references I thought it must be wrong and the nearest alternative I could find was M16 x 1. My next question, which I am sure will get an equally positive response, is :- where can I buy this size of collet as the 3/32" in my set is knackered?
