In my QCTP article I included a suggested design for a tangential tool holder.
In practice it worked out a bit different. There are pictures below and I can send a pdf of revised (undimensioned but 1:1) drawings to anyone who pm's me their email address.
The thing to watch is the angle of the tool slot. In short, the blank needs a 1/4" slot across the face which is towards the chuck. Before cutting the blank needs to be tilted 10 degrees in the two directions taht wuill create the front and side relief. This gives a different holding geometry to the 'eccentric holders' that requires some fairly small sections so teh holder doesn't foul the work. In practice this doesn't seem to be an issue.
Grinding is easy by eye – just a single grind so the top slopes down and away from the tip. Easiest to do with the tool in the holder.
I used this tool to turn a 4" backplate for a chuck and it worked really well.
