            That looks very tidy !

… is the Black Box [below the HeadStock] your Motor Control?

… or do you have an Electronic Leadscrew fitted?

One smart machine. Click on the pic fellas to see another view. Like the control box – is it a home brew or ready-made?

Yep the black box has the on/off switch, speed control and forward/reverse switch.

It has a single to three phase converter for the three phase motor. There is a gas strutt for the tension on the belts and by pulling it in you can change the belt position.

lead screw is controlled by a lever, forward/neutral/reverse.

There is also a steady with it.

I am so in love with it. Got it today, used it today and the results are superior.

I bought it as is, but it was reconditioned and rebuilt by a guy in lincoln.

                  He used ML7 gears

                        Hello Becky,

Just harking back to our earlier exchange on these older Myford lathes, it looks as though yours comes with the non offsetting tailstock. I really would advise against setting it over for cutting tapers, the realignment hassle later on is a real pain.

If it is aligned correctly now then use a boring head with a dummy centre for any such work, it will of course need to be on a 1MT fitting.

Myford offered replacements with a built in cross bar for similarly built tailstocks on the ML4 models that followed but not until well after 1945 when my Dad acquired his; I remember well the frustrations involved.

I think you will have endless enjoyment in your new toy, far better than the C3. I built my DW vertical mill using Dad's

                        Regards Brian

Hi RA. What a butiful lathe, I am still waiting for mine. Thanks to a forum member I have been reading reading, but untill I have mine I feel envious. May I ask one question, I love the colour is it up to each person what colour they want or are there different colours for different models. Malcolm.

I now need to learn how to cut threads on it. But that is another thread lol

Rebekah, is it an optical illusion, or is the lead from the big red nuclear weapon launch button really running behind the chuck and in the "swarf2 area???? If it is then you should re-route it ASAP. HTH.

Nearly forgot. Lovely looking lathe, congratulations and enjoy.

Well the "Proper" colour is pretty much the same grey as your bench!  ( Known , I believe, as:-  "Paint Light Battleship Grey" -or it was by GPO telephones who used a similar colour on their apparatus racks) The blue looks much smarter though and it will not reduce the performance of the lathe at all! wink Big cuts are not on the agenda but just learn to listen to your lathe, take it easy, and the two of you will have hours of fun together. My first lathe was an ML4 – very similar to yours – and I sold this on to a mate when I bought an ML10. He still uses and enjoys the ML4 which was an old lady when I bought her.

                                    Cheers
