My next lathe

I'm thinking of getting another Lathe, I have a Myford Super 7 with a power cross slide, it's a nice machine, but I fancy a change.

I have a thread running about a couple of Warco lathes, but wondered what else you guys might suggest?

So lets say I have around £3k in the pot.

I'd like something a bit larger than the S7 but not necessarily massive.

A must have would be a 2 axis DRO

A decent spindle bore. Power feeds. Metric.

Coolant system & maybe a one push oiling system.

I think I'd prefer a 3 phase machine & inverter, but it's not a deal breaker.

Any thoughts guys and gals. (No prize for the first person to say don't change).

Are you intent on new? Do you actually need a large turning diameter? How about considering a solid old toolroom lathe which would make a nice contrast to the lightweight myford.

Personally to get the most bang for your buck I would go used, £3k could buy a very decent used Colchester or Harrison, is machine parking space an issue?

Not set on a new lathe, I have looked at a Harrison M300, but the good ones are a bit expensive when I want to add a DRO as most don't seem to have them fitted.

No not really, I have a decent amount of room.

For £3K you will get a half decent M300, but you probably will have to add your own DRO. If you look in my Photos you will see my M300 (from the rear) with the back DRO scale in place. Photo alongside is a miniature mounting block (own design) which uses existing M3 holes on the rear face of the bed.

Or why not go on a diet ( or some other money saving scheme) for a while then splash out ……………….?

One of 4 ex- training establishment Warco 1322 machines with all original equipment for sale by same seller – asking £1900 each. Plus a 1330 in another listing for £2400 – all around £1000 under Warco list.

Finding a "nice" (as in "not clapped out, ex-industrial&quot Harrison or Colchester will not be easy. A gear head Boxford would a good bet, if you could find one. Or if you want a well specified, solidly built machine & don't suffer from badge snobbery, a smaller Czech built TOS or Russian lathe.

I have spotted those Nigel but thanks for the tip.

I also have my eye on an M300

I think the advice not to rush is probably good advice.

Chris bear in mind that not all M300s have a gap bed which may restrict you on a traction engine as you won't fit a flywheel and final drive off a 3" engine on it

I don't have a problem with Russian or Far Eastern equipment as long as they have a decent spec and reputation. I think the days of Britain being the leaders in Engineering are long gone tbh.
