      Hi.

I adopted a Q-cut parting tool with my lathe. Never did have the spanner, and my inserts are now used up.

The prices of the Greenwood system are considerably higher than the similar Glanze parting tool. I do have some Glanze tools, and am happy with them, but just wondered if anyone holds the view that the Q-cut is superior and worth paying extra for?

      Regards,

      Mike.

Go onto the Cutwel tools site and get yourself some inserts to fit your Q Cut

I agree absolutely with KWIL. Most small Glanze tools are fine, but their parting system is very much the exception to this (we have one at work, unfortunately). The real problem with them is that there is absolutely no positive location within the holder for the inserts, and they really aren't so easy to keep in place accurately – they tend to move sideways given the slightest opportunity. I've only ever heard good things about the Q-cut though. If I was purchasing one for myself, I wouldn't even consider the Glanze, I'm afraid.

I find the Glanze insert locks in very positively, I've just tried to move it by hand and it won't budge, would need to be knocked out. I've not had trouble with sideways movement, perhaps if it wasn't perfectly perpendicular to the workpiece there would be trouble but I'm always meticulous about that. Admittedly I'd buy from Greenwood if I had that kind of money to spend, but I don't, so the Glanze has done me fine so far.

I've got the Greenwood Tools system and it's very good, but I also have this system that works just as well and costs considerably less per insert.

Can you get inserts like that to work with the Glanze system? The difference of course is the locking Vees, which the ones we were supplied with didn't have – which is why they slip sideways. (Should also add that we have a locking insert cut-off tool like that, but it's not so much use because the diameter you can part with it is rather limited&gt

Shop-APT also have good threading inserts

I had just placed an order for the Glanze insert parting tool and then this thread appeared so I was wondering if I had done the right thing after reading some of the comments!

Anyway it arrived today and although I have only had chance to give it a quick try, it worked fine with none of the problems mentioned and the inserts supplied have grooves so that they locate solidly without any sideways or other movement.

Thanks all – plenty to think about there, and also some great links. I found some miniature boring tools (Korloy) on the Cutwel site too – been looking for something along those lines for a while.

                        Regards.
