Small vice at Aldi (no good as vice but good 3rd hand) £6

Bought one of these today after someone posted about it one one of my motorbike forums

Not very good as a vice but very useful as a 3rd hand having rubber covers over the jaws and the suction base for stability. The jaws are metal and 70m wide

First thought is using it to hold a micrometer

The digital caliper claims to read to 0.0001″ – I have one that does 0.0005″. It does appear to have sufficient digits:

No doubt the pro and anti digital caliper folk will line up for battle now…

The many-piece drill set looks handy for DIY – more bits than most for the price and maybe those TiN coated bits could be useful.

I bought three of those calipers last time to use on my machines e.g. digital depth measure for tailstock, cross slide and mill quill travel

Still haven’t got round to fitting them yet!

I got some of those to fit on my mill, only trouble is they shut off after such a short time.

I bought one of these about a year ago. Great thing about Aldi/Lidl is if you miss something it comes around in perennial fashion 12 months later.

The great thing about the vice is in winter when the workshop’s cold it can be suction fixed to a laminate surfac in the kitchen for holding those awkward jobs of household maintenance where a third hand is needed or an awkward angle. You can then work away in the warm. AS a general purpose small vice its not at all bad altho I expect someone will post to point out that its not top engineering quality and won’t hold an engine block . Poor value then for 6 quid.

I can’t believe the resolution of the caliper however. Anyone bought one and can confirm whether it really resolves to 0.001 inch ? Probably irrelevant anyway as at that price it can hardly have that degree of precision. Still not a bad bargain though, the engineering houses sell these low end models for about double this.

TBH having looked some more at the vice it isn’t bad. It has the same thread on the leadscrew as a similar sized Draper clamp on vice I use regularly and this copes with filing t-nuts and other stuff. It’s got some good clamping force with little “v’s” in the jaws to hold round items. OK I don’t wallop it with a mallet but you knows the limits of your equipment and apply braincells accordingly
