        Hi
Would it be feasable to convert a Coronet Elf wood lathe to a metal lathe?
        Thanks for any advice.

I would have said no, the amount of effort, materials and machines required to convert a simple round bed machine would just not be worth it and you would not end up with a very good metal lathe after all that work.

You would need to make some form of carrage, cross slide and preferably topslide,  unles you could find the bits from a Major, speed would probably be too fast etc.

            Hi David

I’d echo Jason’s comments, by the time you’ve sourced or made all the bits that you would need you’d have spent far more time , money and effort than if you were to buy a cheap old metal working lathe and doing it up, and the chances are the converted Elf would still not have the capabilities of a purpose built machine. There are a lot of good usable old machines out there that can be bought for very little money and will still do a good job – I’m speaking as the owner of 3 Drummond round beds that together cost under £250, and are built like tanks for their size. Coronet did make some metal working lathes as shown on the lathes.co.uk website but they tend to pretty rare. Plenty of other makes and sizes around though, and half the fun is in doing them up – you learrn a lot about them that way.

              Hi,
Re-my enquiry about converting a wood lathe to metal. Both JasonB & Keith,i thank you for your comments,& yes you both confirm what i half expected how silly of me.I guess i need to look out for a reasonably priced metal lathe.
              Thank you.
              Dave.
