I wish to make up a copy of a tool makers clamp as sold amongst others by Eclipse and have been pondering on the best way to form the joggle plate inserted under the clamping screw. Short of making up a press tool I wonder if others may be able to suggest some simpler ways of achieving the required shape.

Not impossible but very difficult to make that double-bend without making a jig of some sort.

E.g. miil or fabricate a step of height equal to the displacement, in a piece of steel bar or thick plate, cut it cross-ways to form a matching pair. Drill a hole to locate a pin than will align the lower die, blank and upper die. A large bench vice would probably supply enough pressure to form the part.

Alternatively you might get away with making one bend then clamping it between some plates of appropriate thickness in a vice to, make the second bend.

When I made mine at school we just used the bench vice. Stand two pieces of scrap of the same thickness as your plate vertically in the vice and 3-4mm apart. Place your plate in the vice so one vertical is in front and one behind and then just tighten the vice. The plate will bend flat against the jaws and the jog will form between the two verticals

You don't really need one, the clamp will work without it.

There are of course alternative ways of making the screw captive, not better, just different.

Anyone contemplating making toolmakers clamps my *** webpage *** might help. Harold Hall's website has plenty of useful information on toolmakers clamps complete with drawings, suggested sizes and different styles, well worth a look: Workshop Projects – Toolmakers Clamps.

One of the many solutions is a counterbore for the knurled screw and use a straight plate.

I joggled one using 2 other clamps, bending by hand. Not as sharp a bend as the commercial item.p1030165.jpg

                        What Roy said.

None of my clamps has one, and neither did any of my father's. They've served us well for nearly a century.

I suppose I would bring out my CZ metal bender, if I really wanted to copy that. Lots of mini metal benders out there. Chronos copied the same thing a couple years back but no longer seem to advertise it.

The plate does help when you are running out of hands, if you look at clive's image when you undo the screw with the plate the jaws will open. Without the plate the jaws stay where they are and the screw just undoes.

Once in position the plate is not needed for the actual tightening or clamping but does help in positioning the clamp/work.

Another option instead of using the usual 1/16th flat bat for the plate is to use 1/8" and mill part of it down to 1/16

Even on the Eclipse version, those plates are a bit of a fudge imo. Tony and Jason have offered the best engineering solutions above.

Why not a washer under a flat plate?

Thanks for the idea of using two scrap pieces Jason it did the trick and thanks also to everyone else who contributed. Have attached a pic of the method in action. The presence of the retaining plate certainly does make the operation of the clamp a lot smoother.
