I have some cast iron drawer handles which have a raised floral pattern which is copper plated . The copper plate is very tarnished, and Brasso etc doesn't seem to cut through the verdigris. Would buffing be too agressive ? Problem is that there are a set of 30 handles (From an old plan chest) and I don't want to experiment to an extent where 1 handle looks different from the rest of them.

They may originally have been plated and then bronze treated chemically and then brushed with a fibre hair brush Possibly then treated with varnish.

I have something similar. Steel which has been electro plated with copper and has some tarnish marks which will not easily polish off. As it is only a very thin layer of copper, futher polishing will probably wear thru the copper coating. To restore it properly, I may have to have the old copper removed and a new coating applied.

Ammoniated clock cleaning solution might do the trick. It dissolves the tarnish on brass without any abrasive action so should work on copper.

You could "replate" the steel by painting with Copper Sulphate solution. The Copper will deposit on the steel. Possibly, Cast Iron will not be so good because although it will work with the Ferrite, the Graphite probably is likely to be inert.
