      hi folks, is it ok to place these bearings in boiling water in order to fit them on to the shafts. have had to replace the gearbox on my vauxhall vivaro van at 23,000 miles and am now recon the old one .

              No problem, they can stand far more than 100 degrees C

              Sorry to hear you got bit by the gearbox bug. You would have thought that by now they would have sorted the problem. An RAC guy told me about a year ago they have gone thru over 100 gearboxes.

                It may depend on the plastic. Nylon absorbs water and therefore increases in size. They should by now be stable and return to size though.

                        Might be safer to heat them in oil, after all that's how they are used. Might be worth putting the shaft in the freezer as well.

                            boiling water did the job fine, replaced all 8 bearings to make sure. was going to sell it to recoup the cost but after what john posted i will keep the box as a spare.
