I was wondering what technique is used to make a morse taper socket. I couldn't find anything on google.

eg: For MT0 could I just drill a 7mm hole 58.5mm deep and then stick the reamer in and turn till it reaches the bottom? Or do I have to roughly turn the taper then finish it with a reamer. The seller I was considering buying them from sells them in pairs with a roughing and finishing reamer.

          The procedure is discussed here.

I used to modify wood lathes that had no MT to #1 MT (some home made lathes, some cheap and elderly ones with no MT). I did tail stock, and main spindle. A wood lathe like this does not need the accuracy of an engineers lathe. I drilled full depth at the small diameter, then using larger drills, drilled down in three steps, then using a MT #1 reamer to finish it to size. Don't know if this is how it should be done, but in those days I was just starting in metal after a few years wood turning.

              As Ian has done.

O start with a drill that just goes right through, then go up in 1/64" increments. Poke each drill into a finished socket, and put a bit of tape around it level with the end of the socket. Drill it into the embryo socket but stop before the tape gets level with the end of the socket. Now repeat with a series of bigger drills.

You are left with a stepped hole that has a minimum of material left to remove.

I have just used the straight reamers as on the right of your pic (oft. described as roughing on the packets!), I would prefer a combination of notched roughing reamer and a spiral finishing reamer, but all of my sockets so far have held standard tapers OK.
