I am thinking that a cheap granite surface plate. e.g. similar to this **LINK** would perhaps make a nice sturdy and good looking display plinth for a James Coombes I am building.

But how would I drill it for the mounting holes.?

If it were me, I would contact the local kitchen fitout company. As granite is becoming popular for kitchen counters, they could give you some pointers.

Alternatively, you could use a diamond drill, if available locally. Or you could use a sacrificial copper pipe and grind your way through using valve grinding paste or similar.

Do it regularly with granite and other stone & glass tiles, for a small hole say 6mm I would use a diamond coated holesaw. Don't pay DIY shed prices get a pack of 10 from the likes of Richon, on say 10mm thick granite you will use one per hole but they are cheap as chips from them.
