Apparantly there was some chap on a trade stand at the 2012 Sandown Park ME Exhibition, selling some sort of 3D Printer kit (im told) for £60. Whilst I was there, I never saw it. Does anyone know if this is true, what the company is/was and is there a web site?

Look up "RepRap". They wouldn't have been selling anything like a complete printer, just the plastic parts for joining a few bits which is how the RepRap machines breed. Lots of people sell these bits as you will find as you e-research the topic.

It was on BBC telly last night (27/03/13) The One Show about 20 mins in.

Like Bazyl said. Lookup Rep Rap on this site and the net.(don't forget the space between Rep and Rap)

I think for £60, you get the plastic parts made by a RepRap machine to make your own machine, but you would need servos and electronics ?? Perhaps a 'donor' inkjet printer ??

I have seen on the net systems for £500ish, but be warned, for precision parts you may need to spend £10,000. At the moment you can 'print' plastic, wax and bone. The chase is on for metals and semiconductors so you could make electronic circuits and metal components.

Last night they made a plastic 'working' corkscrew. Of course, you would need some sort of CAD system as well. Intresting future though.

Thank you for the information, at least I now have an understanding of what is involved.

Site for a number of 3D printer kits. Most work by melting plastic and extruding it thru a small nozzle. By moving the nozzle in all 3 axis, the model is created.

                    Edward,

Some chap, must be me, Peter Roach of Filament Ltd, http://www.filamentprint.com At the very kind invitation of the show organisers. A great deal of interest.

With by friend Bob Reeve, who has written the articles in the magazine, (Reprap 2 article “Driving Prusa” starts publication in Model Engineers Workshop No 204 June).

£60 was just the plastic parts, but later the purchaser has brought entire kit. Kit now improved and can offer a triple head machine also.

Direct metal parts are only in the realms of industry on very expensive machines, but can be made indirectly using the PLA or wax to investment for a casting.

                    Regards Peter
