Most Pultra 1750/70 lathe headstocks seem to have ball-race thrust bearings.Occasionally I come across a thrust bearing that is a solid hard steel thrust collar splined to the spindle shaft. Does anyone have more info such as- is it just an early version? I have seen a suggestion that it may be for the high speed headstock.

My understanding is the early Pultra had solid thrusts and later ones had ball thrusts.

Thanks Dell. Just to clarify, you are referring to the early 17-series? I know the "P" type all had solid thrusts.

Yes 17/50 17/70 not sure about the 15 series though also don’t know when the change happened, my Pultra is post WW2 and it has ball bearing thrust.
